Turtles, not only are my favorite animals, but is one of most endangered animals. I have a quick cute little story to share. My friend Miranda had known how much I love turtles so when she went out to California she decided to buy me a baby turtle. It wasn’t a sea turtle because obviously that’s illegal to be selling, but it was a baby turtle and his name was Jack Jack and he was as small as a quarter. Well, there is a sad part to the story, one day my dad had accidentally turned off the heat lamp and my poor pet turtle died. There after, I had a mini burial ceremony for Jack Jack. However, let’s continue more about sea turtles they are one of Earth's most ancient creatures today. They have been around for 110 million years, since the time of dinosaurs. Sea turtles are endangered when they travel the sea, and there is multiple reasons why like oil spills, littering, poaching and hunting. There are a lot of organizations that can help save these endangered animals. Help saving these sea turtles can increase the population of seeing them on vacation for example, the beaches.
Sea turtles are endangered because of the multiple reasons like oil spills, littering, and poaching. Little did you know, but every single one of these reasons are an endangerment to sea turtles because of our actions. Oil spills get back into the oceans waters and gets washed up onto shore somehow and someway, but as soon as that happens that’s when the turtles start to either breath those chemicals into their bodies which can damage many internal parts. Littering can harm turtles as well because it either floats around in the water or gets washed back up onto the shore just like the oil spills. Sea turtles mistake plastic pieces as food at times, and when taken in, it can mess up their digestive system . As much plankton as there is there is maybe 6 times as much plastic. And last, but not least, is poaching and hunting sea turtles, poaching means to be illegally hunting, hurting, or killing a wild animal out of season, without a license, or in a prohibited manner. An example of poaching would be taking eggs from a sea turtle's nest. In Florida around the months of April-September is when the sea turtle’s will start nesting, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, if they catch you doing so you can get sentenced up to five years in federal prison and/or required to pay a $250,000 fine.
There are multiple organizations out there for us as a community to help save sea turtles. One of them is proposed expansion of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. This takes place in the most critical habitat in the world which would be the Gulf of Mexico. This proposal will restrict oil and gas drilling and limit fishing effort. Another organization would be a non-profit organization which is called Save the Turtles Inc. This organization was originated as Save the Turtles of Parismina in 2001 and had began providing support to the community of Barra de Parismina, Costa Rica on the Caribbean Coast. Then in 2007 was when they had changed their name to Save the Turtles Inc. By 2010 they allotted grants to a variety of programs protecting sea turtles, their eggs, and the little babies.
Saving sea turtles is valuable because two reasons, 1) I personally love sea turtles and it would be a bummer to be on vacation on a beach, and not see because of these things we people do to such lovely animals. 2) When sea turtles are nesting and not all of the babies hatch, their eggs decompose into the sand in which it spreads nutrients.
In my discourse community there is language that is used to persuade our fellow human beings on why they should help save sea turtles. Again that was mentioned before there is multiple organizations to help save sea turtles, but they are all structured in different ways to actually make what they want to happen. Organizations will have emotional stories in their websites or maybe even pictures and videos in order to do so. Promoting these organizations is also a big one because if it’s not advertised or talked about how would we know that sea turtles are endangered because of us littering, poaching, and dumping chemicals into the ocean.
A first example of an organization is Sea Turtle Conservancy was founded in 1959 by a world renowned sea turtle expert Dr. Archie to save sea turtles from extinction. This is one of the world's oldest and most accomplished sea turtle organizations in the world. A second example of an organization is, The Turtle Hospital which is located Marathon Florida they have been there since 1986. These two organizations are important in language because they are there to persuade us into helping them save sea turtles. In both of these examples of sea turtle organizations they have pictures of the sea turtles and just intriguing information about them. Pictures and videos I think are the most important, for example, here is a video clip of a sea turtle having a straw stuck in it’s nose. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2J2qdOrW44. It’s so sad that it makes you not want to litter anymore, just by the way the turtle looks and how the humans are trying to help the sea turtle makes it such a sad situation. Not all language has to be written down or in words; pictures and videos can tell multiple things by just seeing it. Language for my discourse community is unique I think because there is multiple ways of trying to persuade us to do something, and you don’t even need words to understand what the other person is trying to communicate to you.
Little did you know sea turtles aren’t the only endangered sea animals, but so are dolphins. Dolphins are intelligent marine mammals and are apart of the family of toothed whales that include orcas and pilot whales. Dolphins face many dangers in the ocean, but their biggest threat would be humans. Researchers say that 95% of dolphins death is man-related. Sea turtles have threats as well, but the difference is turtles can be on both land and water. However, dolphins can only be in the water. Oil spills are also a threat to dolphins, it gets dumped into the ocean and it can go anywhere. This hurts both animals because it can get into their bodies and destroy them internally. Since dolphins are at the top of the food chain it is more of a higher risk because they eat fish and plants which can be contaminated by oil spills and chemicals. Both, sea turtles and dolphins have laws that are in place to protect them. Just like how sea turtles have organizations to provide help, dolphins have them as well. Sea turtles and dolphins are both struggling in the same ways they are just two different animals in the sea.
